From calm colourways to bold kitchens, discover the hottest interior design trends for 2020. With the end of the year fast approaching, there are new design trends on the horizon!
You may already have some interior inspired, new year resolutions in mind for your home. So, what’s going to be big in 2020? Well, we asked design expert and founder of CR interiors Colette Roche for the inside scoop on the key interior design trends for 2020.
Here are the top 6 trends to watch next year:
1. Calm Colourways
While rooms dressed head to toe in Scandi-grey aren’t going out of fashion anytime soon, the trend to watch is the addition of some colour but in calmer tones.
“2020 is the start of a new decade and with that comes a fresh take on interior colours,” says Colette.
“Dulux announced its Colour of the Year for 2020 as ‘Tranquil Dawn’, a calm & inspiring shade. I would pair this with other gentle tones such as beige, dusky pink or soft grey.”
Painting an entire room or a feature wall in a calmer shade can also bring much needed warmth to a space.
2. Luxurious Opulence
Building on its growing popularity throughout the last year, 2020 will see luxury-inspired design continue to feature in spaces across the country.
“This is a trend that’s here to stay in furniture & accessories. Think rich velvets, textured metallics and deep hues of blue & green. Gold & brass accents ramp up the opulence dial,” shares Colette.

If you’re decorating on a budget, choose one statement piece such as a sofa or armchair and then add vases, throw pillows, a rug or lamp to bring that feeling of opulence to the rest of the room. Up-cycling can also work well by spray painting existing pieces in metallic or re-covering cushions.
3. Nature Conscious
The growing trends of sustainability and re-connecting with nature are making their mark on the world of interior design too.
“Biophilia is the buzz word in interiors at the moment,” says Colette
“There’s a big focus on bringing us close to nature again. Rattan & Wicker furniture is having a major resurgence and will continue long into 2020.”
“My clients are becoming more aware of materials, their impact and are conscious to make sustainable choices.”
This trend has become more popular year on year, with many sustainable building materials actually offering the double benefit of durability, such as bamboo flooring. When it comes to decorating, you can look at buying from fair trade & ethical businesses or even converting your home to be plastic-free.
4. Black Beauty

Although white cabinets are a classic look that work in almost any kind of kitchen style, darker colours are on the charge.
Colette shares that, “The 2020 trend forecast for kitchens is dark & mysterious.”
“Whether it is an anthracite, charcoal or jet black, my clients are becoming braver & bolder when it comes to the colour on their kitchen cabinets & island unit. I personally love the contrast between a crisp white quartz worktop and inky presses, it is timeless & elegant.”
5. Bold Maximalism
While minimalism has been on trend for the years, Colette predicts that a maximalist revival is on the horizon.
“This trend is big news for wallpaper in 2020. Think bold prints, tropical motifs & metallic pops. There is such a variety of choice in wallpaper design & colours, so there is something out there for every taste & budget.”
If the thought of taking such bold moves with your home causes you to break out in a cold sweat – don’t worry, Colette offers the solution.
“A great place to experiment with this trend is in your bland bathroom or WC, instantly creating a wow factor!”
6. Double-Up
Just about everyone has to bring work home with them at some point. And those who don’t work in offices need a space where they can mentally separate work and rest.
“With modern life & our ever-demanding schedules, rooms are being tasked with having more than one use,” explains Colette.
“It’s becoming an increasingly popular request with my clients to incorporate an office space within their home. This is an ideal addition in a guest bedroom as it doesn’t sacrifice precious space, instead maximising the potential of an otherwise underused room.”
It’s estimated that over 200,000 Irish people worked remotely last year, so it makes sense to have a dedicated space.
In Summary
From calm colourways to splashes of opulence, bold maximalism and nature conscious design, 2020 promises to bring a welcome dose of fresh style to our homes.
