The Big Interior Trends of 2021
With 2020 being quite the year to forget, all attention is firmly placed on what’s coming for 2021.
While we have remained indoors for a large percentage of this year, a constant comfort has been the ability to tend to our homes. Suddenly layouts and rooms didn’t work and people craved calm and peace. Spending more time at home has also provided a fresh perspective on our interior decor, so take a look at the trends we think will be big for the year ahead.
1. Natural Neutrals
Paint brand Dulux recently revealed a “reassuring” earthy beige hue called Brave Ground for it’s colour of the year 2021. This is a warm, natural neutral that brings a sense of balance, stability and calm. Paired with other shades of natural, this colour gives a timeless, relaxed & welcoming feel. We think these tones work well with mid-century furniture and rich finishes, such as copper, marble and velvet.
Irish paint brand Colourtrend has also released an updated palette of colours. New shades include stunning neutral tones such as Batch Loaf, Foraging, Esker Ridge Covert Feather. Other stand out complementary tones include the rich, opulent Standing Tall & warm, dusky Chestnut Pink.
2. Raw materials
In the move towards more simplicity, it’s no surprise that the most natural and raw materials possible are the ones to watch. For interior finishes think untreated pale wood, bamboo, woven materials & seagrass. And for textiles there will be more of a focus on airy linens, textural wool & natural sisal.
But expensive natural materials like marble, decorated tiles and high-end ceramics will be central to finishing the grown-up home. A nod to artisans means opulent tile patterns are having a resurgence too, so there are plenty of trends to explore.
From highlighting stone wall features and embracing wooden floors to adding retro terrazzo to the mix, there are a multitude of ways you can feed the raw, organic narrative.
3. Modularity
The Pandemic has caused people to really look at how they live and use their spaces, so in turn modular interiors where multiple tasks can be carried out, is a trend we will see continuing into 2021. For a lot of people, working from home will be the new norm hence we will see clever use of various areas in the home.
Spare bedrooms will be given a multipurpose overhaul, with desk space being incorporated as part of the room design. For smaller spaces, we are predicting a rise in the use of room dividers, which are ideal for screening off workspaces that are located within open plan areas- so to help distinguish work & rest. While, obsolete space such as under stairs will be transformed into valuable desk & storage space.
4. Dried blooms
This is a big current trend that will most definitely bloom into 2021. While dried flowers add a soft & subtle colouring, pampas grass also injects a gorgeous texture to rooms. This trend has proven to add even more sophistication to a luxe minimal interior, whilst also being super low maintenance!

5. The new Nordic
Each and every year we see a rise in popularity in clients looking for ‘Scandinavian’ or ‘Nordic’ style interiors- and this look is about to be big news again for 2021. This trend boasts simplicity with a huge focus on functionality and minimalism. The sculptural shapes and warm atmospheres, combine to create a fresh new direction. Think of de-saturated hues of orange, pink & soft green when accessorising, while simple, line drawing artwork will add to the minimal, clean lines.
